Dishonored: Death of the Outsider on QuakeCon 2017. You can not kill someone else’s

Dishonored: Death of the outsider is an independent addition to Dishonored 2. It does not need the installed main game for him, so you can buy it separately. For fans of the series, the situation is unusual: similar addons for the first part, which also allowed to look at the familiar world with different eyes, were tied to the original game. But this time Arkane We decided to build a new game on the basis of Dishonored 2 about twice as shorter than the predecessor.

And once in the first part in DLC, we played for Daud, the head of the group of hired killers, in the second this role went to Billy Lirk, his student, directly related to the plot of the main game. Without a chaos system

About how Billy differs from previous protagonists and whether it is worth killing the most mysterious character of the series at all, we asked Harvi Smith, creative director during QuakeCon 2017 Arkane Studios Austin.

“Hello, Harvey.”! The main thing is where I would like to start: whether the decisions adopted in Dishonored 2 will affect the plot Death of the outsider? And from what moment does the plot of additions begin?

Harvi Smith: No, they will not affect. We chose a canonical ending for us: Emily was the main character, and she helped Billy Lurk. If we talk about other characters, then one of the heroes of the second part will survive, and someone will die (here I will not spoil). From this we were repelled. In time, the addition begins a couple of months after the events Dishonored 2. You will visit and already familiar locations, and completely new.

– How independent is the story? How newcomers will understand what is happening?

Harvi Smith: For beginners, we tried to lay out the entire Dishonored mythology on the shelves. If you missed something, do not worry-one way or another, you will meet this in the future. And even half of the content found will be enough to understand what is happening. And for those who did not play Dishonored, we made video tutorials. Now they do not need to read them: just press the button and see the video, it is very convenient.

– And how much will the game will take? How many missions are there?

Harvi Smith: This is an independent game, that is, you do not need Dishonored 2 to pass the addition, but it is still shorter than the second part. Most players will take about eight hours. It is difficult to say how many missions are in addition, because the concept of missions in the Dishonored series is a little unusual. By the way, for a change, we added a contract system to the game. Billy Lirk is a hired killer, so there is always work for her in a specialty in the black market.

– It turns out that the chaos scale no longer matters?

Harvi Smith: There is no more chaos system, because Billy Lirk was initially a hired killer. Corvo was a bodyguard, and Emily Empress. They could have other beliefs.

– Is it possible to pass the addition without committing a single murder?

Harvi Smith: Many fans wrote: "Please do not force me to kill someone else's, I love him". Well, spoiler: you can not kill someone else's, like any other goal in previous games. And, according to tradition, the game has a huge tactical freedom: the level design team worked perfectly and created many ways of passing. Although there is no more chaos scale, the game can still be held without a single murder.

– We heard that Emily Koldwin appeared in the second part largely thanks to activists like Anita Sargsyan. The heroine of additions, Billy, also a woman. This is a conscious step towards the equality of the sexes?

Harvi Smith: I especially love the Russian audience for the fact that they crave a more detailed explanation, unlike Americans who need a very direct answer. Criticism of Anita Sargsyan is very important for us. In the first Dishonored, all women really were either prostitutes, or maids, or witches, with the exception of the dead empress and a little girl who also decided little. Therefore, we wanted to play more different roles in the second part of the woman, as in the real world. But we thought about the Emily Protagonist.

Anita’s criticism partly influenced this decision, and this is useful criticism. But, frankly, I don't think Billy became the main character only because of this. I always loved Billy Lurk itself – she is one of the most interesting characters of the whole series. Of course, it is important to develop representation so that as many people as possible see that you can leave the roles prescribed by society. But Billy is just super! We realized that dark -skinned women are poorly represented in video games, and we take a step in this direction, but this is rather a pleasant side effect.

– How the appearance of a new heroine will affect the atmosphere and mood of the game?

Harvi Smith: Billy is a very strong personality, it differs from previous protagonists. Korvo turned out to be quiet, because for the past ten years he spent in the palace. Emily was born in a royal family, and she is a much more privileged person. And Daud was an old killer full of regrets.

Billy is different: she grew up on the streets of Danuall in his most terrible times. Daud raised her like a father, and Billy took his agency in his hands. She is tired of loneliness and wants to find an old mentor, so that life will make sense again. At the beginning of Dishonored 2, Billy Bellyn, but by the end of the plot, she has the strength to take reins again. She clearly knows what she wants, and this is one of the reasons why the new protagonist will be felt completely different.

– Tell us about her abilities.

Harvi Smith: We removed elixirs from the game – now the player’s skills are recharged themselves. The fact is that Billy does not have a mark of someone else's, and it draws energy for abilities directly from the abyss. This is because of the level with a rewind of time from the second part: Emily changed the past, and the hand and eyes returned to Billy, which she did not have at the beginning of the game. From the prospect of a stranger, this is a certain paradox: Billy seems to exist in two forms. So he takes her eyes and arm from her and replaces them with artifacts from the abyss.

The eye is responsible for “foresight” – it stops time, after which Billy, as it were, becomes a ghost: flies over the map, plans further actions, marks enemies, searches for workarounds and important objects. And the hand has a “likeness” skill that allows you to steal the face of the enemy or random passerby – an excellent disguise, everyone will take you for your.

There is also the ability to “replace”: with it a player can be in two places at once. You put your copy in the right place, and then you can “jump” into it from any point where you are. And according to the plot, Billy will find a special blade with which the skill of the “blow of the abyss” attacking the enemy attacks by waves of energy.

– And the last question: imagine what you need to explain in a pair of words to a player who knows nothing about the series at all, what is a new game similar to. For example … food. What food is Dishonored: Death of the Outsider?

Harvi Smith: A stunning question, I will not even think about what to say (laughs). Okay, imagine that you are walking at night and see an open window in someone's house.
